To be...or not to be!

Reading the news today about Eurovision(Europe song contest) and our Macedonian presence there, seems like there was a big fuss behind the stage, apart from the song contest. Apparently Greek delegation threatened the rest of the countries, if they dont call us FYROM when announcing the results, they will face sanctions.

Because i am writing a paper on EU, and its cultural and identity issues, made me think what is one state contained of. Realized that even that we are independent country for 16 years, we might not be in future time, so these couple of years are crucial for us. why?

Nationality and history, religion, culture and language are the pillars of identity of one state. so looking where we are as a state and what problems are we facing with our neighbors.

The name issue with Greece, FYROM means Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Yugoslavia doesnt exist anymore. how can we still have this name of non-existing country. Greeks are denying our existence and nationality. there is a lot of politics involved in this one. Seems like a won battle for us, cause no one calls us FYROM, but has its political implications, and the powerful Greek lobby is doing a great job out there(we changed our flag 15 years ago, and made us to accept the temporary name FYR Macedonia, but only for 10 years, time that has passed long ago, and there is still no agreement with Greece).

Serbian Church doesnt recognize the name of our church(Macedonian Orthodox Church). in Orthodox Christianity you have to be under some mother regional church. because we are the youngest one (together with Montenegro) we have to get under Serbian(and Serbia is under Greece), and not only that, but they are trying to establish new parallel church here(luckily that didnt work out).

And the language and culture, Bulgaria is denying our language and culture, saying that we are some ancestor of Bulgarians or whatever which is completely ridiculous and make me laugh, but the issue is still there( just have in mind that Macedonia is a biblical nation and one of the oldest, and there is 300.000 ppl Macedonian minority in Bulgaria, but they dont have the right to say that they are Macedonians).

And we had conflict with Albanian minority here 6 years ago. Pretty much the same as the rest of the Balkan conflicts...

So seems like everyone around wants to get a piece of our ass. so thats why there are all these issues opened. and they are shaking the pillars of our nations existence.

well, getting in EU(candidate country) and NATO(will get invitation to join in 6 months), means that we have to resolve this issues first, and that gives lack of time on these countries to pressure us to accept their ultimatum(Greece is threatening with veto and different economic embargo's, Bulgaria to accept their cultural heritage, Serbia to accept the parallel church to the one we have).

and our politicians are so stupid, that they are so divided with day to day issues and political marketing in order to stay or get on power, that they are completely lost. thank God we have support from big countries like US, Russia, UK, Germany, China to drive us and resolve this issue, otherwise we would be completely fucked up :)

well, instead of caring about economy(sucks), unemployment(one of biggest in Europe), democracy(we are kinda good on this one) and environment(going in bad direction) like everyone else, we are still stuck with this. and i am kinda tired of all this denial bullshit.

i look forward to the next couple of years when most of these things will be gone.

yeah, and one final thing...Dont you FYROM me, Say Macedonia :)!

My feeling is that you (Macedonia state and people) also deny a lot of things that have been in your past. Denying your past leads to nowhere in your future.
I feel personally ofended when you say that Macedonian culture and language does not have anything to do with Bulgarian culture and language. Yes, there are a lot of politics out there. But the fact that Bulgaria is one of the first countries to recognize Macedonia as an independant state, together with the fact that during official meetings THERE ARE TRANSLATORS means that Bulgaria as a state has recognized and respects both the right of Macedonia to exist as a country and as a culture.
I don't want this to eb accepted as another "oh Bulgarians deny us and steal our history..". I am really curious to hear your opinion on the subject of 200 000 Macedonians have proven to have BULGARIAN INDENTITY and ORIGIN and have received Bulgarian passports and citizenship. And also another 100 000 waiting for that. What does this mean for you taken into account that Macedonian population is around 2 Mio?
I personally would prefer seeing Macedonia as a partnering country not the "offended neighbour" whoes history and identity are denied by everyone. Do try to see the other point... not simply defend yours. Thanks!

When I tell people about the trip I'm going on in a few weeks, I always say I'm going to Macedonia. Once a guy said, "No, you have to call it 'FYR of Macedonia'"

I must have given a look that showed how stupid I thought this command was because we didn't have much of a conversation after that =). Hope to hear from you soon!

Ira,

i am not trying to interpret history here. there are ppl who can do better that than us. i am talking about facts. and facts are :

1. EU Commission has issued official protest to Bulgaria and Greece for disrespecting human right and minorities rights(check the EU comm. site)
2. When talking about history - take a look at wikipedia - just type Macedonia and you will see the ancient Macedonia map and more about history.
- concerning bulgaria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia_%28region%29#Controversy:_the_Republic_of_Macedonia_and_Bulgaria
3. concerning the passports and things like this, you can also look at official numbers 14.000 etc and not as you described it. the point is that we need VISA for every country in the world, and bulgarian citizens dont. thats why they ask for passports. authority here is scared because Bulgaria state is claiming rights over Macedonia because this passports.but the thing is that when we enter EU, they will simply give the passports back.

well, my intention was not to trigger a discussion here. if you want to discuss more, darko_mkd2001@yahoo.com and we can do it. i am really keen to history and read tons of books, especially about the Macedonia issue.

and Ali and Jenna, looking forward to host you in my country.

cheers:)

ahhh, balkan bullshit, substantial ammount of our greatest tradition - "inat" - combined with EU Comission (and other EU crap) stupidity and there you go...

am too lazy to analyse the whole balkan situation now, but I`m sure I`ll write a book about it sometimes... country by country, nation by nation, minority by minority... that`s if albanians let me publish it (by the time I start writing, they will own all our asses :))

cheers to you, ira, all the bulgarians, greeks, albanians, myself and all other bullshiters around :D
